Incorporate new experiences into achieving your goals

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) is a non-profit organization with a long history of preventing, identifying, and investigating insurance fraud and crime, with Timothy Slater as its COO. It is primarily funded by insurance companies and strategic partners, and it collaborates with over 1300 members and partners to protect consumers from fraudulent activities in the insurance industry. Their expertise allows them to work closely with insurance companies, law enforcement, and state regulators to minimize the impact of fraudulent activities on consumers.

Timothy believes that his mindset of trying new things and taking calculated risks rather than any specific experience has shaped his current identity. He joined a company with a long history of success and impact, and he recognized the importance of appreciating and understanding that history. He emphasizes the importance of gaining quality experience at every opportunity while constantly growing. In his view, people who are closest to possibilities and difficulties are also the most likely to generate novel ideas that have the power to completely change entire industries. He underlines the importance of giving team members the freedom and autonomy to be innovative, starting with hiring the right people and allowing them to take ownership of their work. This creates an environment that fosters continuous innovation and permits the taking of calculated risks.

Timothy is enthusiastic about both formal and informal education, always making sure to have a book or podcast on hand for reading or listening while walking. He would say his leadership philosophy is very people-centered. Success depends on having the right team and trusting members to perform. He adds that talent acquisition and growth are critical, as is surrounding yourself with talented people. This approach has consistently led to successful outcomes. He aims to foster a secure environment where individuals feel comfortable taking calculated risks and working together as a team to solve complex problems. By imparting his knowledge and experiences to others, he hopes to empower them to grow as leaders and further their careers. These principles, along with understanding what is genuinely urgent and important, are likely the main aspects of his leadership philosophy. Timothy says that if you're not genuine about improving your employees' lives above your own, people will notice and you'll fail.

NICB’s focus has always been on providing excellent customer service and going above and beyond expectations. While not making major changes, the company has focused on shifting priorities in recent years. They have adapted to new technology and refined their business processes to stay competitive and ensure longevity. Their main goal is continuous improvement for their customers, partners, and communities. They have updated their goal-setting and metrics processes to align with their larger organizational strategy, emphasizing the importance of communication, understanding the needs of their customers, and constantly improving business processes. Providing opportunities for employees to contribute and setting goals that prioritize customer value is crucial.

For Tim, culture is a crucial aspect of organizations, including NICB. Collaboration is essential for fostering a healthy culture, but it must be more than just going through the motions, in Timothy’s view. True collaboration involves understanding that working together leads to better outcomes and a genuine desire to collaborate. It is important for collaboration to be meaningful and not simply a superficial effort. Building a culture of collaboration requires effort, but once established, it becomes second nature and brings numerous benefits. Trust and openness are also key elements in allowing others to contribute their ideas and perspectives. Moreover, NICB emphasizes the importance of collaboration, not just within the company but also with their 1300+ members and partners, in order to effectively combat fraud. They view it as a privilege to collaborate with and learn from various industry teams.

Timothy explains that NICB’s job is to bring people together to combat insurance fraud and crime by providing education and staying informed about emerging trends in the ecosystem. They are constantly learning from others in the ecosystem and remain flexible to adapt to changing needs. Their agility and responsiveness to members and partners are crucial. They have dedicated much of their recent efforts to enhancing their use of technology and data to combat insurance fraud and crime. They have developed new capabilities to identify fraud and crime more effectively and efficiently, while also ensuring they approach these efforts responsibly with respect to data usage and protection. Their goal is to use technology and data to prevent financial losses from insurance fraud and crime, as well as to spot organized crime before it escalates in financial impact. Additionally, they’ve had a rich history of operating in the property and casualty space over the past 110 years and have a tremendous depth of expertise in this area. They have also been looking at ways to expand their range beyond P&C and share their expertise in this space with other areas of insurance.

Summing up, Timothy asserts and believes it is important to recognize their organization's role as a not-for-profit. Some may mistakenly believe this means they are not a business, but their not-for-profit status is simply a funding mechanism and does not exempt them from using strong business practices. Despite not having traditional shareholders, they still prioritize their stakeholders and strategic partners, especially the members who provide support and are committed to their mission.Ultimately, their focus is on working together with carriers, law enforcement, and regulators to combat insurance fraud and crime!
